US ready to work with any govt elected by Bangladeshi people: Envoy
Christensen said he was very much looking forward to the upcoming polls and to seeing their outcome.
United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen today (28 January) said the US government remains neutral in Bangladesh's elections and is prepared to work with any government that is elected by the people.
"The United States government does not take sides in Bangladesh's elections. The outcome of the election is for the Bangladeshi people - and only the Bangladeshi people - to decide," he told reporters after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital.
"We are prepared to work with any government the Bangladeshi people elect to represent them going forward," the US envoy said.
Christensen said he was very much looking forward to the upcoming polls and to seeing their outcome.
Regarding his meeting with the CEC, the ambassador said it was a productive discussion focused on the 12 February election. He said the chief election commissioner briefed him in detail on the policies, preparations and procedures undertaken by the interim government to ensure a credible election.
The US envoy also said that during a meeting last week, the chief adviser expressed hope that election day would be a festive occasion. "I share that hope - that it will be a festive election day where the Bangladeshi people can freely express themselves and that the country will have a very successful election," he added.
"I look forward, like all of you, to seeing the results and votes on 12 February," Christensen said.
On 11 December, the Election Commission announced the schedule for holding the 13th parliamentary election alongside a referendum on the July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order on 12 February.
