Respecting women is our greatest responsibility: Jamaat ameer
“This country belongs to 180 million people. Bangladesh will be a friend to all but accept no one as its master,” says Shafiqur Rahman.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said that respecting women is their greatest responsibility, calling the attacks on women across the country shameful.
"We dream of a Bangladesh where the safety of all women, at home, in public, and at work is ensured, regardless of caste or religion," he said while addressing an electoral public rally organised by the 11-party alliance at Kurigram Government College playground today (4 February).
Shafiqur, whose party leads the alliance, said, "We will not bow to any hegemonic power or let anyone be left hanging on barbed wires. We envision a Bangladesh free of dynastic politics, factionalism, and dominance by any group.
"This country belongs to 180 million people. Bangladesh will be a friend to all but accept no one as its master."
"In July 2024, youth, farmers, workers, and people from all walks of life joined the movement. The blood of 1,400 martyrs remains a debt upon this nation's shoulders. We shall not betray them," he said.
On river erosion and government neglect in Kurigram, the Jamaat chief said, "For 54 years, plundering has taken place under the guise of river management. If given the opportunity, we will return the looted money to the national treasury."
He further said development will begin from Kurigram, the most deprived district in the country, and outlined plans to transform northern Bangladesh into an agricultural-industrial hub.
Shafiqur also urged people to vote 'Yes' in the referendum, which will be simultaneously held with the national polls on 12 February, and introduced the candidates of the alliance for four parliamentary constituencies in Kurigram.
