EC yet to decide on polling in Sherpur-3
Tarique won the Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 constituencies and will vacate one of the seats.
The Election Commission (EC) has not yet decided when voting will be held in the Sherpur-3 constituency and in a seat to be vacated by BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.
The EC had postponed polling in Sherpur-3 following the death of a contesting candidate.
Tarique won the Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 constituencies and will vacate one of the seats.
Speaking to reporters at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital's Agargaon today (15 February), Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarkar said the commission has not yet been informed which of the seats will be vacated by Tarique.
After a seat is vacated, the EC Secretariat will issue a gazette declaring it vacant, followed by the announcement of a by-election schedule, he added.
"The Sherpur-3 election will also have to be held. The commission has not yet decided on the schedule. It will be announced once a decision is taken," he added.
Under electoral rules, a candidate may contest up to three constituencies. If elected from more than one seat, the candidate must retain one and vacate the others within a stipulated time after publication of the official gazette.
The EC has already published the gazette of 297 winning candidates. They are scheduled to take the oath as members of parliament on Tuesday.
