11-party alliance to play 'constructive opposition' role in parliament: Jamaat's Azad
The Jamaat leader said the 11-party bloc had contested the election as a united front and would continue to function jointly both inside and outside parliament
The 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will act as a constructive and effective opposition in parliament, said Hamidur Rahman Azad, assistant secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and coordinator of the alliance's liaison committee.
He made the remarks at a press conference held at the party's central office in Moghbazar, Dhaka, on Saturday (14 February). The briefing followed a meeting of the liaison committee of the 11-party alliance, where several decisions were taken.
"It was clearly decided at the meeting that we will play the role of a constructive opposition in parliament. We will work sincerely to make the new parliament effective in the interest of the people and the country," Azad told reporters.
He added that the alliance seeks cooperation from all sides in carrying out its parliamentary responsibilities.
"If we face obstruction, or if anyone attempts to suppress us in ways that are not lawful, we are also prepared to take to the streets," he said.
Azad said the 11-party bloc had contested the election as a united front and would continue to function jointly both inside and outside parliament.
