Is India's air traffic grounded because of the government's new rules?
The main reason for the flight cancellations by India's largest airline, IndiGo, is its failure to comply with new government rules (FDTL). These rules limit pilot working hours, increase weekly rest, limit night flights and make fatigue reports mandatory. IndiGo's failure to recruit or plan enough pilots has led to a huge number of flight cancellations and stranded passengers. The government has intervened—high-level investigations, temporary exemptions from rules, providing train tickets to stranded passengers and controlling fares. IndiGo has admitted its fault for the problem and is trying to normalise operations between December 10-15. Other airlines have handled the situation relatively well. The government has set a maximum fare limit as fares have risen.
