Peaceful election, power transition now biggest challenge: Nahid
Upcoming national polls will send a signal to the people and the international community about whether the country is heading toward stability, he says
Ensuring a peaceful election and a smooth transition of power is currently the biggest challenge in the country, National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam said today (29 November).
"If we cannot do it peacefully, instability will remain. National unity and stability must be ensured through the election," he said while speaking at a discussion on "Future Pathways of the Economy and Political Commitments" held at a hotel in Dhaka today (29 November).
Nahid added that the upcoming national polls will send a signal to the people and the international community about whether the country is heading toward stability.
Recalling the July Uprising, he said the public, especially the youth, took to the streets driven by certain frustrations, aspirations and goals.
"If we can identify the motivations behind that movement and address the underlying problems, we will be able to carry out the necessary economic reforms for the future of Bangladesh," he said.
The NCP chief also remarked that the economic structure built during what he termed a "fascist era" had created deep inequality and empowered an "oligarchic mafia" class.
"The youth, in particular, have been the biggest victims of this inequality," he added.
